SSRA Supports Howe Cup Team

The SSRA sent one team this year to the 2016 National Women’s Team Championships, the Howe Cup, the United States’ largest squash event for women and an annual team championship tournament run by US Squash. The Seattle B Team, Eve’s Tough Cookies, was playing in honor of Laura Bachman's (captain) mother who was an inspiration to all squash players, men and women alike.  Eve started playing squash in her late 40’s and continued playing until she was 80.  Eve was the first woman to integrate the national age groups draws by playing in the mens divisions of the 75+ division!  With such inspiration, Eve’s Tough Cookies left Seattle and headed to Stamford, CT on November 10, 2016 to spend a weekend playing squash and forming life long friendships with over 250 other squash playing women from around the United States and Canada.

The team started play early Friday morning with a win against the Boston Queen B’s Team and then played a tough 2nd round match on Friday afternoon against the eventual finalists, the Capital Lob-B-ists (from Washington DC).  The team played on Saturday twice, first winning against the team from Minnesota, Purple Reign, and then against falling to the California team, Golden Girls B2.  On Sunday, for the last match of the tournament, the team played the NY Bleeds Blue B1 team, finishing in 8th place out of 16 teams.

Along side the team championships, US Squash also runs a doubles tournament.  Karen Arango teamed up with Leslie Cameron of Wisconsin to come in 3rd place in the Women’s B Doubles Event, playing 5 doubles matches through the 14 team draw.

Once again the Seattle team was heralded for their unique ideas and devotion to this tournament.

Many thanks to Laura for organizing and captaining the team.  We could not have done it without you!
