FINE SQUASH, FUN TIME (submitted by S. Furneaux)

A great start to the 2006 calendar at Juanita bay, despite a less than anticipated number of entries, in which there were some outstanding performances. Of note, Connor Smith and Claudia Regio, entered in the Juniors Round Robin, also played in the Men’s C/D division, both with exemplary effort.

The Men’s A was predictable with Sean Sunderland displaying that characteristic ease of play. He beat Andy Slater and Naveen Garg, to take the honors. Naveen played a blistering first game 9-1 that surely put Sean on notice not to be too easy.

Men’s B , hotly contested and played with great camaraderie, was taken by CAC ‘s own Ali Habib playing a sure and steady game. Runner up Bill Weber played well to nearly take top spot, taking 2 games from Ali. This group had so much fun, entertaining for all. Aussie Gary Polain played so hard we almost got the stretcher.

Juniors saw Claudia, Connor, Nikita Gulati and Buddy Gibbon spar it out, with some excellent displays by all. In the determining match, Claudia prevailed over Connor and showed her natural ability to move and swing with a flowing, graceful composure. Full marks go to Connor for a spirited contest.

Finally, Men’s C/D was won by Ram Bedi in a tough match against Tom Johnston, 3-1.  Consolation went to Skip Holman who had to show his best against Claudia Regio, who did well to make it this far whilst also playing Junior matches. Claudia took one game, not easy for a 13 yr old against a man with the build of a bear.

Some great hospitality, good beer thank you Red Hook, and racquet prizes from sponsor Grays Squash USA. Also thanks Dunlop. To add spice, the A players joined with CAC coach Steve Furneaux to play some entertaining doubles at end of play Saturday. Many thanks to Tournament Directors Sarah Razzaia and Steve Furneaux for making the event fun for all.
