  Washington State Open
December 2003
Tacoma Center, YMCA

Weavings outside of Tacoma Glass Museum.  Great weather for a squash tournament.
Glass Museum Floats and in the distance - the Tacoma Dome!!!!
That's right, we're here for a squash tounament, let's head over to the the tournament venue.  Tacoma Center YMCA 1144 Market Street.
Our friendly hosts - Staff at the Tacoma Center YMCA
Action begins in the early rounds as Eric Williams (at the T) of Tacoma YMCA has no problem reaching just about anything on the court.  (You wouldn't either if you wore size 14 shoes!)  Vince Kwan of Seattle Athletic Club Downtown made his way out of the corner and went on to win all his matches and capture the coveted Washington State Open Men's C title.
Paul Heath of Tacoma YMCA straddles the 'T' and pushes Zander Nosler to the back corners.  This strategy pays off for Paul who loses to Vince Kwan in his fifth match of the tournament.  Paul takes the 2nd place trophy in Mens C and vows to get revenge next time.
Paul Heath (left), Vince Kwan (right) after their Men's C final match.  Okay, you're right - that isn't the face of someone full of revenge.  After the match, Paul and Vince split a case of beer and played video games.  When they're done with the beer, neither could  remember who won the match.  They decided to play it again next week.
As the action picks up during the weekend, the stands are packed.  Dustin Delong with Alysa relax during the 90 second break.
Mark Alger flies in from Alaska just to watch the matches.  Chris Chandler and Yusuf Khan also make the trek to see how Washington's best are faring in Tacoma.
Vikram Jandhyala (in black), Seattle Athletic Club Downtown leisurely moves around the court in his battle with Simon Kelly.also from SACD.  In case you hadn't noticed, black was the IN color at the Washington State Open.
Tom Breen (in shorts) looks on as one of the longest battles of the tournament plays on - Kingsley Wood vs Haile Chesnut.
Kingsley Wood (right), Pro Club gets the win against Haile Chesnut (leftt) Seattle Tennis Club, just barely this time.  Haile is eager for a rematch after busy holiday party schedule clears up.
Big excitment mid-day Saturday when Jeff Crabb, squash club refugee,  injurs himself while playing Barton Truscott in his Mens B match.  Jeff breaks his racquet on his own finger.  Luckily his wedding band saves his life.  Quick acting Tacoma YMCA staff clean and bandage the wounded finger.
Jeff (aka 'the Crabbster') demonstrates for the camera how the injury occurred.  In case you are wondering, crabby has had plastic surgery to insure that the smile never leaves his face!  Jeff withdraws from the tournament and has his finger examined by the nearby hospital.  Diagnosis:  self-inflicted non-life threatening wound.  Jeff plays his league match three days later - still has the same smile.
Manoj Mehta (left) and Steve Jamieson (right) drove down from Bellevue to play their match.  Notice they are not wearing the official tournament colors.  (They missed the memo.)
Todd Butson (right) helps Todd Hargrove (in tournament approved apparel) make the calls.  Todd demonstrates his advanced score keeping technique which consists of the use of one symbol - 'l'.
Men's D winner Calvin Taylor (left), Tacoma Center YMCA, survived his match against the rugged aussie Gordon Burridge of Vashon Athletic Club.  Gordon replaces liquid lost during match at local pub.
Luke Zilly (left), Puyallup YMCA, shakes EricWilliams, Tacoma YMCA, hand.  Time to hit the showers boys.
Ronn McMahon (left), Tacoma Center YMCA drops one game in five matches played during the weekend.  Becomes the 2003 Washington State Open  Champion. Ronn accepts the Yusuf Khan cup from Yusuf and Chris Chandler.  And thus ends the Washington State Open 2003 story.
Sean Sunderland (far right) bribes camera person and gets his picture taken with Ronn and Yusuf.
Men's A runner-up Todd Hargrove, Seattle Athletic Club Downtown insists that if Sean gets a picture then so should he.  Photographer gives in....
